The Brazilian terminal operator was facing exponential growth in TEU throughput following the expansion of the Santos port cluster — the largest port complex in Latin America. The client needed a high-performance, fuel-efficient yard crane solution that could:
Weihua Group delivered a bespoke fleet of Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes designed and tested to exceed tropical-environment and heavy-cycle port duty requirements.
The crane's box-girder main beam and portal frame are fabricated from high-strength Q345B structural steel, sand-blasted to Sa 2.5 and coated with a three-layer epoxy-polyurethane paint system — specifically formulated for coastal salt-air environments. FEA (Finite Element Analysis) was performed to verify structural fatigue life under A7-class duty cycles per FEM 1.001.
A variable-frequency AC drive system controls all five motions: hoisting, trolley travel, gantry travel, cable reel, and spreader. The regenerative energy feedback system recovers braking energy and feeds it back to the on-board diesel generator bus, reducing fuel consumption by up to 30% versus conventional hydraulic-retarder designs.
Closed-loop anti-sway algorithms combine encoder feedback with rope angle sensors to limit residual sway to < 50 mm at end of travel — enabling fully automated stack-to-stack transfers without manual intervention and reducing cycle time by approximately 15%.
All MCC (Motor Control Centre) panels are IP54-rated with forced-air cooling and thermostatically controlled anti-condensation heaters. The diesel genset package is rated for continuous operation at 45 °C, equipped with a heavy-duty air cleaner for dusty port environments.
Full documentation package supplied: CE Declaration of Conformity, INMETRO product certification (Brazil), load test certificates (SWL + 25%), material mill certificates, NDT weld inspection reports, and operator & maintenance manuals in Brazilian Portuguese.
Weihua's export project team managed the entire process from contract signature to commissioning:
Since commissioning, the RTG fleet has delivered measurable improvements across all key performance indicators:
| Gross Crane Rate | Improved from 22 to 28 moves/hour (+27%) |
| Fuel Consumption | Reduced by approx. 28% vs. legacy hydraulic RTGs |
| Downtime | < 0.5% unplanned downtime in the first 12 months |
| Stacking Height | 1-over-5 consistently achieved, yard density +18% |
| Client Satisfaction | Rated 4.9 / 5 in post-commissioning survey |
"The RTG cranes delivered by Weihua exceeded our expectations on both performance and reliability. The anti-sway system is particularly impressive — it has made a visible difference to our operators' productivity." — Terminal Operations Director, Brazil
