Customer Background

The end user is an automotive parts manufacturer in South Africa operating a large stamping and press-shop facility. The plant runs multiple production lines producing automotive body components and structural parts, supported by rows of mechanical and hydraulic stamping presses, robotic transfer systems, and automated feeding lines. Given the weight and size of the dies, coils, and stamped parts moving through the facility, the customer required overhead lifting equipment that could handle both routine production-line material flow and heavier, less frequent die-change and tooling operations.

The Challenge

The factory's press shop and tooling storage areas presented two distinct lifting demands:

  • Production line handling: Moving coils, semi-finished stampings, and finished automotive parts along the press line required a crane rated for frequent, precise, cycle-intensive lifts.
  • Heavy tooling and die handling: Storage racks holding large stamping dies and mold sets required a higher-capacity crane capable of safely lifting and repositioning heavy tooling during die changes.

The customer needed a reliable industrial overhead crane supplier experienced in automotive manufacturing environments, capable of delivering equipment engineered for South African site conditions, with dependable after-sales support for an overseas installation.

The WEIHUA Solution

WEIHUA supplied a double girder overhead crane system sized for the plant's press shop, including a 20-ton double girder overhead crane for the main production and material handling area, complemented by a 32/16-ton double girder overhead crane serving the heavy tooling and die-handling section of the same facility.

Key Equipment Features

  • Double girder box-type structure for higher rigidity, wider span coverage, and stable lifting performance
  • Electric wire rope hoist trolley for smooth, controlled vertical lifting
  • VFD (variable frequency drive) control on hoisting and traveling motions for precise, cycle-friendly operation suited to production-line handling
  • Radio remote control for safer, more flexible operator positioning
  • Overload protection and safety limit switches to protect equipment, dies, and personnel during lifting operations
  • Factory-tested before shipment, with each crane commissioned and inspected prior to delivery

Note: The automotive parts factory operates more than one overhead crane across its facility. The 32/16-ton crane serves the heavy die and tooling storage area, while the 20-ton crane covers the main stamping and production line, reflecting the different lifting demands within a single automotive manufacturing plant.

Delivery and Installation

Following production and factory testing in China, the crane girders and components were prepared for oversized cargo transport, loaded onto flatbed trailers, and moved to port for ocean freight to South Africa. On-site erection followed WEIHUA's standard installation and commissioning procedures, with the crane systems tested under load before handover to the customer's maintenance and production teams.

Results

With the WEIHUA double girder overhead crane system in operation, the automotive parts factory gained:

  • Smoother, more controlled material flow along the stamping/press production line
  • Safer, more efficient handling of heavy dies and tooling during changeovers
  • Reduced manual handling risk in the press shop
  • A scalable lifting solution supporting both routine production and heavier maintenance-related lifts

FAQ

What capacity overhead crane is used in automotive parts manufacturing?

Automotive parts and stamping plants commonly use double girder overhead cranes in the 10–35 ton range, depending on the weight of dies, coils, and stamped components being handled. This project used a 20-ton crane for production line handling and a 32/16-ton crane for heavy die and tooling handling.

Why use a double girder overhead crane instead of a single girder crane?

Double girder overhead cranes offer greater structural rigidity, higher lifting capacity, and wider hook coverage across the span, making them well suited to press shops and factories handling heavy dies, molds, and tooling.

Does WEIHUA export overhead cranes to South Africa?

Yes. WEIHUA supplies double girder and single girder overhead cranes, gantry cranes, and hoists to industrial customers across South Africa and other overseas markets, including the automotive manufacturing sector.
